A fire that engulfed a historic Perry County bridge Thursday afternoon is being investigated as arson, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Flames were spewing from the covered Waggoner’s Mill bridge as firefighters arrived at the East Madison Township scene, off Shermans Valley Road, according to a Facebook post from the Landisburg Volunteer Fire Co.
The bridge has been standing since 1889 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Trooper Megan Ammerman confirmed to PennLive the arson investigation is ongoing, but did not immediately have more information available.
Social media photos of the fire showed smoke spewing from the bridge’s charred remains. Only the bridge’s skeleton remained once the fire was extinguished.
The more than 125-year-old Dellville Covered Bridge in Perry County’s Wheatfield Township was destroyed by fire in 2014. It was recently replaced. Two men, who were teenagers at the time of the fire, were later charged with setting the blaze.
