6-Alarm Fire Ravages Boston Building

Feb. 28, 2022
More than 100 Boston firefighters battled a six-alarm fire that caused extensive damage to a multi-family building, and spread to second building.

More than 100 firefighters battled a 6-alarm fire in East Boston for more than three hours on Monday morning, authorities said.

Firefighters responded to 183 Maverick Street shortly before 4 a.m. for what began as a 3-alarm fire. When they arrived, firefighters found heavy flames on all three floors of the building, authorities said. The fire had also extended to a neighboring building.

By 4:15 a.m. the fifth and sixth alarms were called as the fire burst through the roof. The frigid overnight temperatures complicated fighting the fire, authorities said. Ice formed nearly immediately after the water fell from the home.

The fire eventually spread to three neighboring multi-family homes.

Despite the size of the fire and the conditions, fire officials reported no injures. Ladder 2 rescued one individual from the second floor.

More than three hours after firefighters responded, flames could still be seen inside the building, according to photos shared by the Boston Fire Department on social media.

Just before 7 a.m., first alarm companies began to make up and detail companies will remain on scene to monitor hot spots.
