    A man is in critical condition after fire swept through a Birmingham home early Thursday.

    Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service was dispatched at 4:54 a.m. to a report of a house fire with a person trapped in the 1000 block of Westley Street.

    Lt. Catina Williams said crews were able to quickly get inside and pull the man from the blaze.

    Firefighters resuscitate him on the scene and rushed him to the hospital. He remains in critical condition.

    Williams said no other injuries were reported.

    The home sustained extensive damage.

    The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
