A Colorado volunteer firefighter is recovering in a Denver hospital after he was severely burned battling a blaze last week.
Platte Canyon firefighter Dylan Castello suffered serious burns on his arms and upper body, including first-degree burns to his right arm, shoulder and back, KCNC-TV reports. He is expected to receive skin grafts for the burns Monday.
Castello, 26, was part of the response to a structure fire in Bailey on Thursday. Another firefighter, who wasn't identified, also was injured in the incident and was released from the hospital Friday, according to the department.
“Firefighter Castello works as an arborist," the department said in a statement. "As you can imagine, this incident will impact his ability to work for a while."
A GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $10,000 has been set up for Castello, who joined the department last year. So far, it has raised more than $7,000.
“I want to thank everybody so much for all this overwhelming support," Castello said in a statement via the department. "It is my pleasure and honor to serve this community. As a firefighter, it is wonderful to see the community return the appreciation."
