An apartment fire in Frederick early Monday left 10 people hurt, four seriously.
A three-month-old and an older child were transported to Children's National Medical Center while the adults were taken to MedStar at Washington Hospital Center and Meritus Medical Center, according to United Fire Chief Marc McNeal.
The others were released after treatment.
The fire destroyed the family's first-floor apartment, and spread to others on the second and third floors.
"It went up the outside balconies," McNeal said, adding that the ones on the higher floors sustained smoke damage.
McNeal said all the occupants were out of the apartments when firefighters arrived. Seeing the number of people, he immediately called for an EMS task force which sent additional BLS and ALS crews to the scene.
The Maryland State Police helicopter was down due to fog. So, the injured people were taken by ambulances to the D.C. hospitals.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Residents said they heard fire alarms going off in the building.
