Chatham Fire Department's trench rescue team was called to North Beach Island after a 15-year-old girl became buried up to her neck in sand while digging a hole on the beach.

A 15-year-old girl was rescued Sunday after a dune collapsed on her at a Chatham beach.

Chatham firefighters were called to North Beach Island around 5 p.m. Sunday after receiving a 9-1-1 call for a report that a teen had become buried in the sand while digging a hole.

The girl was buried up to her neck in the collapsed sand, fire officials said.

A trench rescue team from the fire department, paramedics and the harbormaster all responded to the scene. Firefighters and the harbormaster placed a protective barrier over the victim to minimize further collapse and were able to successfully remove her.

The teen was brought by boat to the Chatham Fish Pier where she was evaluated by an awaiting ambulance. She was not injured and did not go to the hospital.
