PA Crews Rescue Driver who Rolled Tractor-Trailer on Side

June 24, 2020
Hazle Township Fire and Rescue firefighters used a heavy wrecker and ropes to rescue a driver who drove his tractor-trailer into an embankment, rolling the vehicle on its side.

A tractor-trailer drove into an embankment and rolled on its side during an early Tuesday morning crash on Interstate 81 north in Hazle Twp.

State police at Hazleton are investigating the circumstances.

Mike Volciak, assistant fire chief at Hazle Twp. Fire and Rescue said it was about 2:30 a.m. when firefighters were dispatched to the wreck at mile marker 140.4 by Luzerne County 9-1-1, finding a tractor-trailer on its side about 50 to 75 feet in an embankment.

Firefighters called for a heavy wrecker to stabilize the truck so it didn’t slide further down the hill and assisted the driver out, he said.

Volciak said due to the location and for the driver’s own safety, firefighters used ropes to help him out of the embankment.

Firefighters from Harwood, Hazleton city and Sugarloaf responded, as did Greater Hazleton Ambulance and Valley Regional Ambulance.

The interstate was closed to traffic for a time.

Firefighters left the scene around 5:15 a.m.
