At least eight people were injured after a New York City tandem bus crashed through barriers and fell 50 feet Thursday, leaving the vehicle hanging off an overpass.
The incident involving an MTA bus happened at around 11 p.m. at University Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway in the Bronx, the FDNY stated in an online update. Police told WNBC-TV that the bus driver was "unable to navigate the roadway and went off the road."
“While responding to this incident, I began discussing the information we were receiving, picturing a bus hanging off the edge," Acting Battalion Chief Steven Moore said in a statement. "We had two scenes here where Rescue 3 began securing the bus up-top while Engine 43 made their way around to begin treatment of the civilian patients."
The driver injured his jaw in the crash and is in stable condition, according to WNBC. Passengers hurt in the accident were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
"We assessed and treated a total of eight patients from this accident," stated Deputy Chief Paul Hopper, who supervised emergency medical treatment and transport during the call. "The bus fell approximately 50 feet onto the access road. The patients suffered injuries consistent with a fall from such a great height."
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no citations or arrests have been made in connection with the accident.
