Mo. Fire Chief Killed in Crash While Responding

A Missouri fire chief, who also is a police officer, was killed in a wreck while responding to a house fire Monday.

Alton Fire Chief Eddie Johnson Jr., 45, was responding to the fire in his police cruiser near Alton when the wreck occurred, acording to Ky3.com.

The cruiser went off the left side of the highway, hit a driveway approach, and rolled several times.  He was ejected from the vehicle, the station reported.

Johnson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported by ambulance in West Plains, but was pronounced dead.

The fire that he was responding to destroyed the home.

He'd been fire chief  since 2010. Besides being a full-time police officer, Johnson also was an Oregon County reserve sheriff's deputy. 

He leaves behind a wife and three children.
