A Harrisburg Fire Department lieutenant has died in a crash with a suspected drunk driver as he responded to a fatal structure fire.

Dennis Devoe was passing through an intersection on his way to the scene of a major structure fire Friday night when the crash occurred, according to ABC7.com. Witnesses reported Devoe was traveling at a normal speed when another car went through a stop sign and hit Devoe’s vehicle on the passenger’s side, the television station reported.

Both vehicles then traveled across the street and ended up in an open lot. EMS providers took Devoe to Hersey Medical Center where he was initially listed in critical condition on Friday night but later succumbed to his injuries Saturday. The driver of the other vehicle, a 19-year-old female, fled the scene, but was later caught and taken to a local hospital for treatment. She was charged with several violations including DUI, at the the station reported.

Devoe was responding to the call from the funeral of another fire who had died from cancer when the crash occurred, according to the newscast. He had just stopped at his fire station to pick up his gear moments before the fatal crash.

Devoe was traveling to the scene of a two-alarm fire that killed a 2-year-old girl and injured four others.
