TX Firefighters Injured at Prescribed Burn

March 13, 2017
Borger's fire chief was seriously injured when a fire whirl sent embers into an area where crews were working.

Two firefighters suffered burns while they were conducting a prescribed burn in Donley County last week.

When juniper tree started burning, it sent embers outside the previously burned area at the JA Ranch and created a fire whirl.

"A fire whirl is essentially a tornado with fire in it," JA Ranch owner Andrew Bivins told newschannel10.com. "It threw fire 30 yards in every direction."

Borger Fire Chief Bob Watson and firefighter Clay Lozier were caught by the unexpected fire.

They were airlifted to Lubbuck where they were treated for burns to their face and hands.

Watson remained in serious condition at the Timothy J. Harnar Burn Center over the weekend, Borger Lt. Stacy Nolen told Amarillo.com.

Lozier was released from the hospital.
