July 11--The U.S. Fire Administration has announced the line of duty death of a US Forest Service firefighter in northwest California.
William "Bill" Jaros, a 38-year-old engine operator, was on a conditioning hike with his crew Saturday when he fell ill and collapsed. His crew members immediately initiated life-saving efforts but were unable to revive him.
The cause of his death is now under investigation through the Del Norte County Coroner's office.
Jaros was a 12-year veteran with Engine 312 of the Six Rivers National Forest's Gasquet Ranger District/Smith River National Recreation Area. The conditioning hike he was on was part of the continuing preparedness routine for wildland firefighters.
"My heartfelt condolences goes out to all that have served with Bill," acting Six Rivers Forest Supervisor Michael Green said in a release. "This is a difficult time for the forest, and together we will make it through. My heart and prayers goes out to the family, friends and colleagues of Bill -- it is a loss for us all."
