Oct. 04 -- DeLand Fire Chief Dan Hanes, who was hired to take over the city's fire services less than six months ago, has died from complications from a cardiac emergency, a city spokesman announced Thursday.
Hanes, 59, was hospitalized Sept. 23 and was receiving around-the-clock care since then, according to the city.
"Chief Hanes very quickly made a significant, positive impact on our fire department," Mayor Robert Apgar said in a prepared statement. "He was a great role model for our firefighters and became a beloved member of our DeLand family and the community. The city commission and staff are devastated by his death and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family for their loss.
Hanes began his employment with DeLand in April. City spokesman Chris Graham said Hanes had more than 35 years of experiences in fire services. He previously served as fire chief for the cities of West Palm Beach and Fernandina Beach. Prior to those two stints, he served with the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Department.
Hanes' sons, Danny and Andrew Hanes also gave a statement.
"Words cannot express our gratitude for the love, prayers and support we've received throughout this difficult journey," they said.
Division Chief Mike Vazquez has been serving as the acting fire chief.
