PLAINVILLE, MA—The community is rallying around a member of the local fire department after he was put into a medically induced coma while battling COVID-19.

GoFundMe page was created by the family of Brett Bertram on Wednesday to help cover the costs of his medical bills. More than 100 donors raised $7,667 by Thursday morning.

Bertram recently contracted the coronavirus and has since been hospitalized.

"Brett is a member of our call department and is now in a medically induced coma due to a battle with COVID-19," the fire department said.

The fundraising page confirmed the coma, saying Bertram had been placed on a ventilator. The GoFundMe said Bertram is also an EMT, who has built his career "around helping others in their time of need."
