KY FF Still Fighting for His Life after Being Crushed by Semi

March 14, 2022
Gilbertsville firefighter Michael Bynum is still hospitalized after being crushed by a semi while working an accident scene.

Gilbertsville Volunteer firefighter Michael Bynum has undergone multiple operations and is still fighting for his life after being struck by a semi-truck while operating at an accident scene on Feb. 23.

Bynum responded to a scene on an ice covered bridge that resulted in multiple wrecks and the death of an 18-month-old.

While working the scene, the semi first pushed Bynum nearly 100 feet, then pinned him against the railing of the overpass, WPSD Local 6 reported.

Bynum suffered both internal and external injuries, requiring multiple operations.

He is currently in UK Trauma Center’s ICU receiving care.

When Bynum is discharged from the hospital, he will have a long path to recovery. He will have to learn how to walk as well as eat, and drink again.

Resources have been set up to help out including a GoFundMe page, and a t-shirt fundraiser where all of the proceeds go to any expenses or needs for Bynum and his family.
