NYC EMT Shot by Intoxicated Patient

The patient pulled out a 38-caliber revolver and opened fire in the ambulance striking a Richmond University Medical Center EMT.

A drunken patient shot an emergency medical technician in the back Wednesday night inside an ambulance headed to a Staten Island hospital, police sources said.

The EMT was shot in West Brighton on Forest Ave. near Oakland Ave. just after 7:55 p.m., police and FDNY sources said.

The ambulance had just picked up a drunken man at the Funkey Monkey Lounge, a bar near Llewellyn Place and Forest Ave., said NYPD Inspector Mark Molinari, the head of Detective Borough Staten Island.

The EMT was working on the patient, Thomas McCauley, 37, as the ambulance headed toward the hospital, when the patient suddenly pulled out a .38-caliber revolver and opened fire, sources said.

The 25-year-old EMT was hit in the back near the left shoulder, sources said.

The ambulance pulled over, and McCauley bailed out of the back doors and made a run for it, Molinari said.

But the shooter didn’t get far before a retired NYPD detective and an off-duty Department of Sanitation environmental protection HAZMAT lieutenant grabbed him, said Molinari.

The medic works in an ambulance that belongs to Richmond University Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Meredith Gaskins confirmed Wednesday night.

His ambulance partner drove him to the hospital in stable condition, Molinari said.

McCauley’s gun was held together with black electrical tape, said a law enforcement source. Cops also found he was carrying a knife and pepper spray, the source said.

A call to the Funkey Monkey Lounge went unanswered Wednesday night.

Before becoming the Funkey Monkey, the bar was known as the Drunken Monkey. It was shuttered in 2015 after state authorities determined that the late Angela “Big Ang” Raiola, a star of the VH1 reality show “Mob Wives” and a convicted felon, was the bar’s silent owner.

In June 2014, a bar patron fatally punched a man after an argument inside the watering hole spilled out to the street.
