Off-Duty VA FF Dies During Swift Water Training

Alicia A. Monahan, an 11-year member of Chesterfield County Fire and EMS, suffered a "catastrophic accident" while teaching in North Carolina.

A Chesterfield County firefighter died Saturday while she was off-duty, teaching swift water rescue in the North Carolina.

Alicia A. Monahan, 41, was an 11-year member of Chesterfield County Fire and EMS and assigned to Engine 207-B, according to the department.

In a post by the Virginia Search and Rescue Dog Association, it said she "suffered a catastrophic accident earlier today while instructing students during a swift water rescue course in North Carolina."

She leaves behind a fiancee and two sons, the Chesterfield Professional Fire Fighters Association shared.

“Our prayers and full support are with her fiancé and both her sons,” the fire department shared. “Our hearts and prayers go out to Alicia’s family, friends, and co-workers during this very difficult time.”

“Alicia was more than a teammate she was also a personal friend to many of us and this loss is unimaginable,” the search and rescue association shared.
