NJ Firefighter Dies Week After Responding to Incident

Westwood, NJ Firefighter Kevin May suffered chest pains the morning after the fire.

A New Jersey firefighter stricken with a cardiac issue after a house fire has died.

Westwood Volunteer Firefighter Kevin May, 29, responded to a five-alarm fire on Oct. 16. The next morning, he was experiencing chest pains and breathing problems, according to North Jersey.com.

He received a stent at a local hospital and released on Oct. 20. On Monday, he was found unresponsive at his home.

May had been with the department for 11 years and served as vice president. He also was the coach of the softball team.

"Kevin was also one of the WFD’s Santa Claus actors and helped out multiple other Fire Departments in the area around the holiday season. Kevin has left a hole that will be extremely hard to fill. Kevin loved and cared for everyone around him, fire officials wrote on the department's Facebook page

Visitation will be held from 3-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at Saint Andrew's Church. A fire department service will begin at 7:45 p.m. Firefighters are asked to arrive by 7:30.

Funeral services are set for Friday Oct. 28 at 10:30 a.m. also at Saint Andrews Church.

All departments wishing to attend please arrive at 10 am Apparatus parking will be available in the parking lot behind the church
