Tempest and the International Firefighter Cancer Foundation
Tempest Technology Corp. and the International Firefighter Cancer Foundation are teaming up to spread awareness on the use of PPV to reduce exposure to cancer causing airborne toxins and carcinogens.
A firefighter’s exposure to cancer causing agents occurs most commonly during overhaul. While the immediate danger of fire has been dealt with, harmful airborne toxins and particulates such as Carbon Monoxide, Benzene, Asbestos, Hydrogen Cyanide and dozens of others are still present in concentrations far greater than the levels of toxicity.
While the use of PPE, especially SCBA’s, can help reduce immediate exposure, significant danger still looms as chemicals bind to clothing and are absorbed through the skin. This exposure leads to absorption long after a responder has left the incident, and exposure may then occur each and every time he/she puts on their gear.
Using Positive Pressure Ventilation post knockdown will rapidly ventilate these cancer causing agents out of the involved structure, replacing them with clean, fresh air. This simple step greatly reduces the amount of toxins and particulates present, therefore significantly reducing contact and rate of exposure.
Cancer affects not only us, but the ones we love as well. Don’t wait until it’s too late. You can make a difference today by taking just a few steps in ensuring your exposure to these deadly toxins are all but eliminated. Together, we can end cancer in the fire service! PPV + PPE = Cancer Free.
