SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation (SFFCPF) announced the return of its gala, The Art of Fire, to be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at The Palace Hotel (2 New Montgomery St, San Francisco). Proceeds from the gala will support SFFCPF’s science-based studies and ongoing efforts to provide medically approved cancer screenings for the early detection of cancer in active and retired firefighters.

Individual tickets for The Art of Fire gala are $250 with table sponsorships ranging in price from $1,000–$25,000.  For more information or to purchase tickets, visit sffcpf.org or email [email protected].

This year’s gala will honor Dr. Jennifer Brokaw for her astounding compassion as a patient advocate; Edward Stone and Joseph Carrillo, workers comp cancer navigators for the City and County of San Francisco, who ensure firefighters receive the proper benefits outlined in the firefighters cancer presumption laws; Rachel Morello-Frosch, professor in U.C. Berkeley’s Department of Environmental Science, Public Policy and Management, and Sharyle Patton, Director of Commonweal Biomonitoring Resource Center, for their integral role in major science-based studies that have shown the direct correlation of toxic exposures and elevated rates of cancer in the firefighting profession.

"The Art of Fire has become an important event to raise awareness of SFFCPF’s ongoing fight against cancer through educational and cultural changes in the firefighting profession,” said retired San Francisco Fire Department Captain Tony Stefani. “This will be an unforgettable evening to honor those who are on the front lines of fighting this insidious disease.”

The gala begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a photo exhibit reflecting the passion and energy of the men and women who make up the San Francisco Fire Department community. There will also be an auction of unique, one-of-a-kind prints featuring the San Francisco Fire Department.

Following will be an intimate dinner, remarks from a special guest speaker, and the presentation of “The White Helmet” to the evening’s honorees. The evening closes with a dessert reception and dancing to The Fabulous CruiseTones.

The San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation was launched in 2006 by retired San Francisco Captain Tony Stefani, and over the last ten years has organized biannual kidney and bladder cancer screenings for both active and retired San Francisco Fire Department personnel and assisted neighboring departments to set up similar screenings.  The Foundation has supported two groundbreaking studies related to cancer in the fire service - a fifty-year retrospective study of the San Francisco, Chicago and Philadelphia Fire Departments and a bio-monitoring study of female firefighters.

The Art of Fire event sponsors include California Professional Firefighters, Fire Velo, SF Fire Credit Union, SF International Airport Charity Golf Tournament, and Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger. Media sponsors include ABC7, iHeartMedia, San Francisco Business Times, San Francisco Chronicle, SFGATE.com, and San Francisco magazine.

ABOUT THE SAN FRANCISCO FIREFIGHTERS CANCER PREVENTION FOUNDATION

Since its inception in 2006, SFFCPF’s been dedicated to the early detection and prevention of cancer in both active and retired San Francisco firefighters. The Foundation has played a major role in identifying and reducing toxic chemical exposures to the men and women of the firefighting profession. Through its support of science-based studies and ongoing targeted cancer screenings, these studies have become the basis to show that there is a direct correlation between the firefighting profession and elevated rates of cancer.
