Two top officials with the Detroit firefighters union have contracted COVID-19, along with nearly 100 city firefighters and medics.
Tom Gehart, president of the Detroit Fire Fighters Association, and Bill Harp, the union's vice president, both tested positive for the virus, WDIV-TV reports. Gehart, 40, was taken to the hospital Wednesday with a 105-degree fever and difficulty breathing.

Nearly 100 Detroit firefighters and medics also have COVID-19, and several department members have said they fear spreading to the virus to their families. Some members have been hospitalized, and firefighter Franklin Williams Jr. died from the virus April 8.
“It is a new thing for all of our members," Harp told WDIV. "Now, are they going to be killed in the line of service and taking this home to their families? It’s a whole new level of challenge for the DFD in service. Helping another, you may be causing the death of a family member.”
