A Tennessee volunteer firefighter has been charged with setting several fires recently that damaged several structures including a church.
Leslie Roy Winchester, 19, is charged with four counts of aggravated arson and other offenses in connection with the fires in Waverly, according to WSVM.
Winchester reportedly admitted to setting a fire inside the Humphreys County Fire Station District 5 at 2160 Turkey Creek Road by lighting paper in a trash can, the station reported.
Among the buildings damaged or destroyed were a church, a Masonic Lodge, a store and a vacant house.
One firefighter was hurt battling the church fire, and another at the Masonic Lodge incident.
Winchester, who was named firefighter of the year by Humphreys County in December 2021, is being held in lieu of more than $1.7 million bail.
He allegedly admitted setting the fires, and told authorities the specifics, according to news reports.
