ALBANY, Ore.
--
Albany firefighters say a man escaped an early morning explosion and fire that destroyed a business on Industrial Way.
The 12,000-square foot building, which housed PMI Truck Bodies, went up in flames early this morning.
Fire crews say the person who called 911 reported smoke and flames and heard several explosions.
When firefighters arrived, the 200-foot-long building at 1454 Industrial Way SW was fully engulfed and collapsing.
Crews heard more explosions and battled the fire from the outside. It was brought under control within about a half-hour.
Investigators say business owner Brad Hadman managed to escape the fire. He had been sleeping in a motor home parked inside when he woke to a whistling sound.
He was able to look around. He saw flames and light. (He) got out through the back wall that had blown out as part of the explosion, says Mike Trabue, with the Albany Fire Department.
Hadman was not injured.
The cause is under investigation.
