KANSAS CITY, Mo. --

Kansas City firefighters said a man threatened them with a knife after emergency crews helped take his ailing mother to a hospital on Tuesday.

An ambulance crew was called to a home in the 4300 block of East 45th Terrace in Kansas City when a woman needed medical attention because of a problem with diabetes. Firefighters said that after the woman was loaded into an ambulance, her adult son came out of the house with a knife.

Once the ambulance left the area with the woman inside, the man said he was going back into the house to get a gun, police said.

Firefighters said they moved to a safe distance a block away and alerted the Kansas City Police Department.

Police said when they went to investigate, the man was not there and had driven himself to the hospital where his mother had been taken. Police said they alerted hospital security officials that the man was coming, but they had been aware of any incidents since the initial threat.

No injuries have been reported.
