Ice gave way on an Orland firefighter as he attempted to rescue a dog that had already fell into the lake yesterday morning, according to The Journal Gazette.
Crews found the dog named Sandy -- part yellow Lab and part Brittany spaniel about 60 feet across a channel in the waters of Lake Pleasant at approximately 9:49 a.m.
The dog's owners were unable to get the dog out and called 9-1-1 and it was stranded in the water for nearly a half-hour.
Firefighter Mike Garrison was tethered on shore and was picking his way across the ice when is gave way, sending him in the water with the dog.
The crew pulled Garrison and Sandy to safety as the ice broke in their trail back to land.
