An Elgin firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and at least 29 people were displaced following an apartment fire yesterday afternoon, according to the Chicago Daily Herald.
The fire was sparked by a maintenance crew installing a hot water heater at the complex on the 600 block of Wing Street at approximately 12:42 p.m. The fire started in an end unit then spread to other units through the attic.
"Three apartments are completely gutted, burned through the roof. We had to pull the ceilings down on all three," Capt. Tim Maroder said. "The guys made a tremendous stop -- they really did. It was a great save."
Estimated damages to the building were not immediately known.
The firefighter was transported to Sherman Hospital and a woman was taken away in an ambulance after suffering a seizure.
