MIAMI --

Miami-Dade County firefighters rescued a cow stranded in a canal Saturday afternoon.

Rescuers were called to the Florida turnpike about a mile south of State Road I-75 about 2 p.m., where they found the cow stuck in the muddy bank.

Firefighters wrapped heavy tow straps around the cow and were able to pull her to safety.

Officials said they do not know how long the cow was trapped or how she managed to get there. The animal did not seem injured, but was too exhausted and weak to stand on her own.

The owner was notified and the cow was moved to a shady area to recover.

Officials said there were a total of eight rescue vehicles and 20 firefighters at the scene.
