NEW CASTLE, Pa. --

Evacuations are in progress as firefighters battle an intense blaze at a New Castle chemical plant.

The blaze broke out at Castle Environmental, Inc., located along River Park Drive Thursday afternoon.

Fire officials are calling for an evacuation of a one-mile radius around the blaze. Inside this perimeter are several homes, businesses and a nursing home along East Lincoln Avenue.

The Department of Environmental Protection said they were told there are 1,000 gallons of sulfuric acid in the building. They said authorities told them that the acid has been "affected by the fire."

At this time, there is no word on what started the fire or whether anyone was injured.
