More than 20 people were left homeless after a fire in San Leandro Monday evening.

The fire started at an apartment complex on Tananger Avenue near Libery Street.

Firefighters said a woman living there was cooking on her stove when a grease fire broke out.

The woman and her two children escaped with no injuries, but their apartment was heavily damaged by the fire. Eight other units sustained water damage.

One firefighter was taken to a local hospital for a minor injury.
