Several Elgin residents were injured Thursday night as they tried to escape a fire in an apartment building.
The fire broke out in a multi-unit apartment building at 1680 Mark Ave. in Elgin Thursday evening, according to Elgin Fire Assistant Chief Mike Baker. A box alarm was called to send in fire companies from other municipalities, Baker said.
At least two people jumped from their second-story apartments to escape the blaze. Some of the injured were taken to area hospitals, Baker said. He did not know the number of people injured or their conditions, but he said an Emergency Medical Services box alarm was called to send several ambulances.
The fire was under control just before 10 p.m., Baker added. The cause remains under investigation.
