A burning candle ignited a fire in a Palm Bay home Wednesday, causing extensive damage to a front room, officials told Local 6 News partner Florida Today .
Palm Bay Fire Rescue units contained flames to one room. However, smoke damage spread throughout the house on the 800 block of Carnival Road SE, according to spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez.
The fire started around noon. Fire officials believe a dog or cat in the house knocked over the candle, Martinez said.
The female homeowner, who was not identified, and the animals were all safe, Martinez said.
"The victim had several pets in the home that could have easily toppled the candle from on top of the desk," said Battalion Chief Gene Harrell. "Its important for people pay attention when they have candles burning in the home, especially this time of year.
