A Monday morning fire destroyed a facility that housed supplies for the needy, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The Pearland Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze at the old American Rice warehouse on Highway 35 at about 11 a.m.
Officials said the warehouse contained 15 to 20 18-wheeler-sized loads of food and medicine that belonged to the Christian Alliance for Humanitarian Aid.
The warehouse is closed on Mondays, but a volunteer who stopped by the building noticed the electricity was out.
"That is the good thing that happened. We didn't have anybody in the warehouse," Executive Director Curtis Wilke said.
"The warehouse holds food for the needy -- perishable frozen goods, clothing, things of that nature. They send those products worldwide," Pearland Assistant Fire Chief Buck Stevens said.
The Alliance had just sent a batch of supplies to Botswana. The items destined for Haiti were not so lucky.
No injuries were reported.
Anyone who would like to help the Christian Alliance can contact the Somebody Cares phone bank at 713-621-1498.
