Officials said a man found inside a burning Mount Vernon apartment Wednesday night was beaten before he was burned, and now police said they're worried that the fire was intentionally set.

The blaze broke out around 11 p.m. in the 1000 block of Saint Paul Street.

Police said the building had to be evacuated because of heavy smoke, but the flames were contained to just one apartment on the seventh floor.

Officials said the man was found after fire crews ventilated the apartment. He is in critical condition at Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

His name has not been released.
