The fire chief of Eudora, Kan., has been removed from his job after being charged with damaging an Olathe hotel bathroom during a party.
Spencer S. McCabe, 30, was arrested about 4 a.m. Sunday after Olathe police responded to a disturbance call at the Holiday Inn at 101 W. 151st St.
He was charged Monday in Johnson County District Court with a felony count of criminal damage to property.
The charge is a felony because the damage was greater than $500. The incident occurred after he became angry when a female friend left the party, authorities said.
McCabe was released later Monday after making a court appearance and posting a $1,000 bond.
As a condition of bond, he was ordered not to consume alcohol.
Johnson County District Attorney Paul Morrison said alcohol contributed to the incident.
Morrison declined to provide details except to say that damage was estimated at about $1,000. Olathe police referred questions to Morrison's office.
Mike Yanez, administrator of the city east of Lawrence in Douglas County, said Monday that he relieved McCabe of his duties pending further action by elected officials.
The city's police chief and several off-duty officers also attended the birthday party for the wife of one of the officers, but McCabe was the only person arrested and charged.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 9.
