May 15--HYANNIS -- Airports on Cape Cod and Nantucket have received a total of $1.9 million in Federal Aviation Administration grants for new equipment, lighting, fencing and signs.
The grant money is part of $8.9 million awarded by the FAA to airport projects in Massachusetts, according to a statement issued this week by the office of U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
The grants awarded locally include $735,000 for Barnstable Municipal Airport to buy snow-removal equipment and to install guidance signs, $270,000 for Provincetown Municipal Airport to install apron lighting and $900,000 for Nantucket Memorial Airport for aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment as well as to install perimeter fencing, according to the statement.
Separately, Barnstable Municipal Airport officials announced this week that work has begun on a $5 million project to rebuild the aircraft parking ramp on the east side of the airport. More than $4.5 million of the project's funding is being paid by the Aeronautics Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, according to airport officials.
In addition, 24,700 solar panels with a capacity of 6.9 megawatts are currently being installed on almost 19 acres at the airport.
