An off-duty Nahant firefighter sprang into action Wednesday morning after seeing a multi-family home on fire in Lynn and ran into the building to evacuate residents.
That firefighter, Robert Barreda, is credited with quickly getting six adults and seven children safely evacuated from the home.
“Because of Firefighter Barreda’s quick actions and bravery, no one was injured in the fire and firefighters were able to get to the building quickly in order to prevent more damage from being done,” Nahant Fire Chief Chief Michael Feinberg wrote in a statement. "On behalf of the Nahant Fire Department I would like to commend Firefighter Barreda for his lifesaving actions today. ”
Barreda was driving down Essex Street around 9 a.m. when he saw the fire.
“Firefighter Barreda immediately sprang into action and stopped his vehicle, called 911 to report the fire and then entered the burning building to evacuate the residents inside,” officials said.
The flames quickly grew into a three-alarm blaze and fire spread to multiple nearby buildings, officials said.
With the help of firefighters from other communities, the Lynn Fire Department was able to extinguish the blaze.
No injuries were reported.
