Natural Gas Tank Launches, Crashes into TX House 900 Feet Away

June 6, 2023
"It was a catastrophic and sudden release of a compressed natural gas cylinder," said Harris County Deputy Fire Marshal Mitchell Weston.

A natural gas tank was launched more than 900 feet and crashed through the roof of a Channelview, TX house.

Miraculously, no one was injured, KHOU reported.

Officials said a man was cleaning an area when he cut into the cylinder. It launched through their roof and into the air, crashing through the roof of a house 900 feet away. The floor of the living room also has a large hole.

"It was a catastrophic and sudden release of a compressed natural gas cylinder. The pressure inside of the tank was able to release in such a manner that it actually caused damage and blew part of the home apart, very similar to what you'd see with an explosion. I am very surprised that no one was injured or hurt given the amount of damage and the power that this tank was able to produce," Harris County Fire Marshal Deputy Chief Mitchell Weston told reporters.

"It’s crazy ... it’s crazy. I thank God, to be honest, because that could have killed me. My roof is all fallen apart ... my wall," Antonio Medrano said of the incident that started on his property.

"Like a little whistle and out of nowhere I heard a boom," Medrano said.

What's even crazier, he and officials said is that the tank launched more than 900 feet away and into another home. A video showed the moment it exploded and flew away.

Fortunately, the cylinder crashed through the roof of the second house while Jose Ortiz's family were outside on the porch. He's thankful no one was injured.
