NORTHBOROUGH, MA — Retired Brockton firefighter, Vic Parziale, will play in this year’s Golf Fights Cancer Golf Marathon on June 3, to help raise awareness about occupational cancer and to encourage firefighters, who have a 9% higher risk of developing cancer than the general population and a 14% greater risk of dying from cancer, to understand the life-saving power of early detection.
Parziale’s caddie for the Golf Marathon will be his son, Matt Parziale, himself a former Brockton firefighter and a successful U.S. amateur golfer who played in the 2018 Masters and has golfed alongside Tiger Woods. “Golf and the firefighting community are the two things both Matt and I care deeply about. We are hopeful that we can help change some lives with what we raise," says Vic Parziale.
The 2021 Golf Marathon brings together two organizations – Golf Fights Cancer (GFC) and DetecTogether – that are deeply committed to fighting cancer and saving lives. Funds raised during this year’s GFC event primarily benefit DetecTogether, a national nonprofit that teaches people how to recognize the earliest warning signs of cancer. “When cancer is detected early, people have the best chance of surviving and treatment can be less invasive,” says Tricia Laursen, DetecTogether President & Executive Director. “Knowing what to watch for and when to act is lifesaving.” DetecTogether brings its education to firefighters, young adults and community groups for free, thanks to the generosity of supporters.
For the first time ever, GFC organizers added a second day of golf marathoning and raised its fundraising goal to an unprecedented $500,000. “The excitement for this year’s event is amazing, as is the collective power of our fundraisers,” says GFC Chairman & Co-Founder, Brian Oates. “It’s incredibly inspiring to see the impact that people who share a common interest can make in the fight against cancer.” The Golf Marathon will take place on June 3 and 4, 2021 at Juniper Hill Golf Course in Northborough, MA.
