Spokane firefighter Ed Foster had been with the department since 1993, and he died from complications of a cardiac event nearly a month after finishing his final shift at Station 17.

A firefighter died suddenly from complications of a heart attack over the weekend, nearly a month after he had retired.

Spokane firefighter Ed Foster had retired June 25 after serving with the department since March 1993. He recently had been assigned to Station 17 before his retirement, the department stated in a press release.

"Time flies. Please remember to be kind and do the right thing," Foster said after his final shift, according to the department.

On Sunday, Foster died from complications of a cardiac event. The department said his death is considered in the line of duty but did not go into details.

"During the time that Firefighter Foster served our community he touched many lives," Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said in a statement. "His values and memory will live on through his brothers and sisters of Spokane Fire Department."

Editor's note: An earlier version of the story incorrectly stated the date of Foster's retirement. Firehouse.com News regrets the error.
