On Nov. 7 at 8:15 a.m. the Mount Carmel Fire Department and AREA EMS were dispatched to 244 East Second Street in Mount Carmel for a house fire.
Mount Carmel Police arrived on scene in minutes and found smoke venting from the three-story row home. The officer confirmed it was a working fire and determined there was no one inside the home.
Captains 5 arrived on scene and requested that a second alarm be dispatched to the scene.
Ladder 2 and Engine 2 arrived and established water supplies from hydrants. Hoselines from Engine 2 were deployed and attacked the fire from the Alpha side.
The fire quickly spread into the exposure homes and command ordered the third alarm which brought units from four different counties.
In about 20 minutes it was determined that all crews needed to be evacuated from the homes to make an exterior attack with large caliber hose lines.
The heavy fire was knocked down, allowing crews to re-enter the home, but a second evacuation was sounded when the roof collapsed in the primary fire building.
Crews moved to use elevated master streams from the ladders that were on scene.
A tanker task force was also used to supply the ladder trucks.
Rapid intervention teams from Kulpmont, Altamont and Englewood stood by.
Crews remained on the scene until 12 p.m. searching for hot spots and investigating the cause of the fire.
