The AMR crew suffered minor injuries in the wreck that left the ambulance in pieces.

A patient died Saturday morning after an ambulance crash in Riverside County.

The AMR ambulance broke into several pieces after slamming into a palm tree. Medical equipment and vehicle parts were strewn over a wide area.

Officials did not say whether the patient being transported to a hospital died of injuries sustained in the wreck or from a previous condition, KCAL reported.

Nearby residents said they raced to the scene after hearing the noise. One said the amount of damage shocked him.

The crew members were treated for minor injuries and released.

The California Highway Patrol in Riverside is investigating the crash.
