Smeal Fire Apparatus Co. announced that Calgary Fire Department, Alberta, Canada, has ordered 16 Smeal custom pumpers as part of a multi-year contract. Calgary Fire Department is one the largest departments in Canada with more than 1,400 members protecting one of North America’s fastest growing cities.
The new enclosed top-mount pumpers will join 10 Smeal aerials delivered since 2009. These will be the first apparatus in the fleet to be equipped with Smeal’s GREEN POWER Anti-Idle Technology.
Safetek Emergency Vehicles Ltd., Smeal’s Canadian dealer, sold the apparatus and provides warranty and service support for the department.

The new Smeal top-mount pumpers are designed with an enclosed pump panel, which provides protection from the harsh winter weather that Calgary firefighters face. Each will be built on a Spartan Gladiator chassis powered by a 500-horsepower Cummins ISX 12 engine and equipped with Advanced Protection Systems with side-impact air curtains. They feature Waterous® CSU 2,000 GPM single-stage pumps (rated at 7,000 LPM), Waterous Eclipse with Advantus 3 single-agent, compressed air foam systems, 500-gallon (2,000 L) water tanks, 30-gallon (120 L) foam cells and Command Light V7 Traffic Flow Boards.
All of the pumpers feature Smeal’s proprietary QL-12 peer-to-peer electrical system for enhanced reliability.
Delivery of the apparatus is scheduled to begin in September 2015.
