UNION CITY, NJ, MAY 6, 2014 – An early-morning fire started in a grocery store in a three-story wood-frame building. First-in units found heavy fire through openings in roll-down security gates in front of the store. The fire quickly rose up the voids in the original building and extended to a row of five attached 2-1/2-story occupied dwellings. Smoke was showing from the cockloft of two of the dwellings when the first-alarm units arrived. Approximately 40 residents were displaced. More than 100 firefighters from the North Hudson Regional Fire Department operated at the scene along with mutual aid units from Jersey City. One firefighter suffered a minor injury.
