An Oklahoma ambulance crash into a tollbooth left four people injured early Friday.
The accident involving a Jackson County EMS ambulance happened shortly before 2:45 a.m. at a tollbooth along the H.E. Bailey Turnpike in Newcastle, KOCO-TV reports. A worker was in the tollbooth at the time of the crash.
According to The Lawton Constitution, the ambulance struck the tollbooth's attenuator, or crash cushion, which is designed to reduce damage in collisions. The vehicle then hit the tollbooth itself, as well as the canopy beam.
The ambulance driver—Dora L. Handcock, 53—was pinned inside the vehicle, and Bridgecreek firefighter extricated her. Two passengers—Justin H. Guffrey, 33, and Dominga R. Gloria, 43— also were injured, and all three occupants in the ambulance were flown to Oklahoma University Medical Center in Oklahoma City, the Constitution reports.
Handcock suffered leg and internal midsection injuries and was in good condition. Gloria suffered internal midsection injuries and was in serious condition.
Guffrey was treated and released from the hospital. The tollbooth worker, who was taken by ambulance to another hospital, also was treated and released.
